Hello, DETOUR II artists! We are excited to announce the date of the first exhibition artist talks moderated by Franklin Hill Perrell has been set for Friday July 16th at 6PM. It will be held at and feature the artists showing at the 11 West Gallery. It's the first event to be held in this space and promises to be a great one. We will hold others throughout the show, including a talk with the Main Gallery artists, and are planning additional exhibition initiatives both live and virtual. Speaking of virtual, thanks to the support of the LI Arts Alliance, East End Arts was able to invest in a 3D scan of the DETOUR II exhibition to create an online viewing experience of each gallery! Delighted to be included in this local exhibition this summer ! DETOUR IIOPENING RECEPTION
SATURDAY, JUNE 5, 4 p.m. - 7 p.m.View the show & meet the artists! What is DETOUR? DETOUR II is an annual exhibition that showcases the work of 16 of the many talented artists working on the East End of Long Island and the divergent forms, techniques, routes they take to arrive at their unique work. Each artist lives full or part-time on the East End of Long Island and is influenced in the numerous and nuanced ways by the area. Many of these artists have established careers, exhibiting for decades in New York City, as well as nationally and internationally and are in the collections of major museums, yet have been seen very little, if at all in Riverhead. DETOUR II is curated by Glen Hansen with assistance from Adam Straus. The opening reception is on Saturday, June 5 from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at both 133 E. Main Street and 11 W. Main Street, Riverhead. ![]() Marta Baumiller’s exuberant textile/sculptural hybrids are a feast for the eyes and senses, while also engaging with larger issues of community and social engagement. ARTFUL CIRCLE ARTIST SPOTLIGHT 4/14/21
Marta Baumiller at Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery at Stony Brook University BY NICOLE STRAUS PICTURE EDITOR & DESIGNER: DEBBIE WELLS One of the silver linings of the pandemic has been seeing the response of artists to it. Some have excelled in extraordinary and enlightening ways. A case in point is Marta Baumiller’s MFA exhibition at Stony Brook University, which creates an exuberant sense of place and community both indoors – and outdoors. At the Staller Center’s Zuccaire Gallery, you can experience Breathing Room, a monumental immersive “shelter” of sewn fabric and plastic reflecting changing light and color as it gently floats in place, shifting as viewers pass in and out of it. Soul Bath, an outdoor drive-thru experience, rifts on the medical tents that have sprouted up for testing and vaccines, but reveals a much more pleasant atmosphere of vibrant colors and flags blowing in the wind. With sound by Cliff Baldwin, Baumiller has created a sanctuary that surrounds the viewer with playful and imaginative elements, reminding us that these challenging times have also drawn us together.
“Breathing Room” is on view at the Staller Center’s Zuccaire Gallery at Stony Brook University through April 16, 2021.
“Soul Bath” was on view in South P Lot/Commuter Parking, Stony Brook University
through April 1, 2021.
